Economic Program Internship Program 2017 - 2018
The Economic Program at the Center for the Study of Democracy offers two to six months’ internships for outstanding university students, who are interested in gaining experience in the premier Bulgarian public policy think-tank. You will have the opportunity to work with leading policy analysts on current economic, political and social issues in Bulgaria and the European Union. Students from economics, sociology, political sciences, international relations, and public administration, are particularly welcome to apply.

In 2017, priority internship opportunities are offered in the following domains:
  • Clean energy transition policies in Europe & Bulgaria - research on socio-economic factors, driving individual and collective energy choices in Europe; decarbonisation and decentralisation energy policies in Bulgaria;
  • Energy security and governance - research on national, regional and EU energy security; foreign economic footprint and soft power mechanisms in CEE energy sectors;
  • State capture risks and good governance – research on corruption, good governance and state capture risks in Central and Eastern Europe – energy, financial and telecommunication sectors, governance of public procurement, management of state owned enterprises, etc.;
  • Hidden economy – research on drivers and manifestation of hidden economy in Central and Eastern Europe, studying the population, business and public sectors;
  • Competitiveness and innovation: preparing the annual Bulgarian competitiveness profile following the IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook methodology; assisting the preparation of the annual national assessment report Innovation.bg.

  • Requirements:
  • fluency in English (second major EU language will be considered an advantage)
  • good computer literacy (spreadsheets, presentations)
  • good research, analytical and written skills will be considered an advantage
  • organizational skills and ability to work under pressure will be considered an advantage

  • Responsibilities:
  • assist in drafting new project proposals
  • assist in drafting policy reports and analyses
  • assist in preparing events, publicity, and outreach
  • assist CSD staff in any other current assignments

  • Upon entering the CSD internship program, each intern will be assigned to a senior researcher from CSD to oversee and mentor her/his work. Outcomes from the intern’s work are discussed internally and might be included or quoted in CSD’s official publications and papers. Upon the successful competition of the internship each intern receives an individual Certificate of Completion and can request a letter of recommendation.

    Note: The internship is unpaid. Specific tasks could involve remuneration. Students could apply for the Ministry of Education and Science project “Students Internship Programs” and if approved, get remuneration according to the project conditions.

    Approval of candidates: Internship applications are reviewed at the end of each month. Only the candidates listed for interview will be contacted.
